Top Mounted Wire Balustrade for Decking
This project involved installing a top mounted wire balustrade around a large raised patio. The client wanted something safe but minimal, with a handrail that matched the rest of the garden design. We used powder coated steel posts, stainless steel wire infill, and a hardwood timber handrail. The system provides full fall protection but keeps the views and layout open.
Why Choose Glass Balustrades for Decking?
A top mounted wire balustrade is a smart choice for garden decking. It’s strong, long-lasting, and doesn’t block the view. It creates a clear edge to a raised surface without making the space feel boxed in. It’s especially useful when the garden is a key feature, and you don’t want to interrupt sightlines with solid or opaque barriers.
Compared to glass, a wire system is easier to maintain. There’s no risk of marks or streaks from weather or cleaning products. The gaps between wires allow wind to pass through, which is useful in exposed locations. It also works with almost any surface finish – including brick, stone, timber decking, or concrete slabs.
Adding a timber handrail gives the system a more natural, softer feel. It helps blend the balustrade into a garden setting while still giving a comfortable grip height. We often recommend it on residential projects where the outdoor space is a place for relaxing or entertaining.
What the Job Involved
Surface-mounted steel posts were drilled into the brick wall. We aligned the spacing to allow the tensioned wires to run straight and avoid any uneven gaps.
The stainless wire rope infill was fitted in a horizontal layout. The wires were fed through the post holes and fixed with stainless steel tensioners. Each wire was pulled tight to avoid sagging and keep the installation secure under load.
The timber handrail was fixed over the top of the posts. The result was a tidy, consistent finish across the full perimeter. It now gives a safe edge for adults, children, or guests using the patio space.
Materials Used
- Grey powder coated steel posts (square)
- Top mounted base plates
- Horizontal stainless steel wire rope
- Hardwood timber handrail
- Stainless cable ends and post fixings
Building Regs and Safety
We installed this top mounted wire balustrade to fully comply with Planning Portal guidance on decks and BS6180:2011. That standard sets the rules for height, spacing and structural performance for barriers guarding a drop.
The posts are spaced to avoid deflection and handrail height is above the minimum. All cables are tensioned and secured with fittings designed for structural use, not just cosmetic installs.
When you have a raised patio, you must meet these safety standards – especially if the drop is over 600 mm. In this case, the brick wall height made it a clear requirement. Everything was installed to meet that spec from start to finish.
