Frosted Glass Balustrade for Decking – Frameless Privacy Installation
This job was a frameless frosted glass balustrade for decking, fitted to a first-floor roof terrace. The homeowner needed it installed quickly into a rubber roof, so we used timber sleepers to get the channel fixed and glass fitted within their deadline. It gives full privacy, clean lines, and meets all current building standards.
Why Choose a Frosted Glass Balustrade for Decking?
A frosted glass balustrade for decking gives you privacy without boxing in the space. The glass lets light through but stops direct views, which is useful on raised terraces, rooftops or garden decks overlooked by neighbours. It’s a solid barrier against the wind, but doesn’t make the area feel closed off like timber or composite screens.
If you want a clean finish, a frameless system is ideal. It keeps the lines of your build uninterrupted. There are no bulky posts or rails to get in the way. For clients with a modern extension or new build, this keeps everything consistent. It also works with more traditional homes by not clashing with brickwork, render or slate.
Unlike fencing or slatted screens, frosted glass doesn’t need painting or regular maintenance. It’s toughened, sealed and fixed once – then it’s done. It stays looking good in all weather. We often recommend this style of balustrade for terraces used as seating areas, balconies off bedrooms, or raised patios where privacy is essential but the view still matters.

What the Job Involved
The gutter dropped into a sloped roof, so one panel had to be custom notched to follow the angle. All other panels were full height with frosted finish both sides.
The channel was fixed to timber sleepers as agreed with the client. This was a temporary solution to allow final floor finishes or painting of the sleeper at a later date. The glass was installed level and secure, this approach avoids any delays or rework later.
On each end return, we fixed stainless steel clamps into the masonry to provide lateral strength. This means there’s no flex in the system even though it’s frameless. The overall look is seamless but solid – ready to use now and easy to adapt later.
Materials Used
- Toughened frosted glass panels
- Base-fixed frameless aluminium channel
- Stainless steel side clamps
- Treated timber sleepers (temporary base)
- Fixings suitable substrate
Building Regs and Safety

Every glass balustrade we install meets the requirements set out in BS6180:2011. This is the British Standard that governs the use of safety barriers in domestic and commercial buildings. It covers glass thickness, loading, fixing methods and installation details.
Raised decking and roof terraces nearly always need a compliant balustrade. If the drop is 600mm or more, the rules apply. It doesn’t matter if it’s a private garden or part of a new build. The Planning Portal has more details on what counts as permitted development and when safety barriers are legally required.
We’ve worked with architects, main contractors, and homeowners on all types of raised platforms. Frameless systems like this are a popular solution when you want something that’s safe but doesn’t dominate the space visually.
Getting a Quote
It’s easy to get a quote. Just send us a few photos of your decking or terrace and give us rough measurements. Let us know if it’s ground floor or raised. Tell us what the surface is – timber, concrete, GRP, or steel. We’ll reply with a clear cost, a couple of fixing options, and lead time based on your location and access.
We also offer staged installs. If your site isn’t ready for final fixings, we can install onto a temporary base like we did here. Then we can revisit later to transfer it to the finished surface. This avoids rush decisions or holding up your wider build schedule.
