Glass Balustrades for Decking: Strong, Simple and Built to Last
If you’ve got a raised deck, glass balustrades for decking are a tidy way to make it safe without blocking out the garden. This job’s a good example – clean lines, solid materials, and no clutter.
We fitted this for a customer who wanted clear views across the countryside, but still needed a barrier to keep the space safe and secure. The result does exactly that. You’ll see from the photos how it all lines up properly and follows the edge of the deck neatly.

Why Choose Glass Balustrades for Decking?
You’ve got options when it comes to decking safety – timber spindles, metal railings, or glass. Glass tends to suit modern spaces best. Here’s why it works:
- Keeps your view open
- Needs very little upkeep
- Safe for kids and pets
- Clean finish, no visual bulk
- Works with timber or composite decking
Timber rails often sag or rot. Steel bars can look harsh. Glass stays sharp for years with only the odd wipe-down.
What the Job Involved
This was a large, stepped timber deck on the back of a detached house. The customer needed:
- A barrier around the whole raised area
- A gate at the side path for access
- A modern look to match the property
- Uninterrupted views of the garden and fields
We used a modular stainless post system with clear safety glass panels. It’s top-fixed to the deck boards and runs cleanly along the perimeter. The gate uses the same fixings as the rest of the balustrade for consistency.
Materials Used
No custom fabrication – just solid, proven components:
- Glass: Toughened clear safety glass
- Posts: Brushed stainless steel
- Fixings: Top-mounted circular base plates
- Clamps: Saddle clamps with rubber inserts
- Gate: Matching glass gate with a long life hinge and latch
No handrail was needed here, which keeps the finish open and minimal.
Building Regs and Safety
Any decking over 600 mm off the ground needs a guardrail. This setup ticks that box and meets BS6180:2011, which covers barrier strength, height, and fixings.
The glass is fully toughened and securely clamped. Posts are bolted down into solid timber support. It’s a simple spec, but done properly.
